Intent
At Leyland Methodist Schools, our intent for Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) is to equip our pupils with essential life skills and knowledge. Our curriculum covers key areas such as emotional well-being, healthy lifestyles, relationships, and safety. Through engaging discussions, role-playing, and interactive activities, children learn to navigate social situations, make informed choices, and understand the importance of both physical and mental health.
Our PSHE curriculum is designed to support pupils' spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development by providing engaging and inclusive content. This enables them to make appropriate choices as they grow into responsible citizens, prepared for the complexities of modern Britain and the wider world. We foster a supportive and inclusive environment where children can develop confidence, resilience, and a sense of responsibility. A key component of our curriculum includes Relationships, Sex, and Health Education (RSHE), ensuring we meet statutory requirements while taking a preventative approach to prepare pupils for adolescence and adulthood.
Implementation
Our PSHE provision aligns with the school’s vision of developing confident citizens and resilient learners who are creative, resourceful, and capable problem-solvers. Social and emotional development is embedded throughout the curriculum and school culture, helping pupils understand and manage their feelings, build resilience, and become independent, curious thinkers.
At Leyland Methodist Schools, we use the 1 Decision curriculum alongside No Outsiders and recommended resources from the PSHE Association to deliver a comprehensive PSHE and Wellbeing education. The curriculum aligns with the PSHE Overview, ensuring consistency across year groups and topics. Our curriculum also incorporates British Values, fostering a sense of democracy, individual liberty, mutual respect, tolerance, and adherence to the rule of law.
Our curriculum provides a strong foundation for children’s health, emotional well-being, and academic achievement, promoting:
Safety
Caring
Achievement
Resilience
Friendship
Democracy
Respect and Tolerance
Rule of Law
Early Years Foundation Stage
Our PSHE curriculum in the Early Years is supported by No Outsiders, which provides the essential building blocks to meet the Department for Education’s Relationships Education and Health Education requirements.
Key Stages 1 and 2
Our PSHE curriculum is structured into six themed units, with the support of 1 Decision and No Outsider lessons throughout the year:
Autumn 1: Families and Friendships – Focuses on feelings, emotions, conflict resolution, and friendships.
Autumn 2: Respecting Ourselves and Others – Emphasises respectful relationships and British values.
Spring 1: Belonging to the Community – Teaches children about the world around them, their community and environmental awareness.
Spring 2: Money and Work – This covers financial education and living in the wider world.
Summer 1: Growing and Changing – Explores human development, physical changes from birth to old age, and personal safety.
Summer 2: Physical Health and Wellbeing– Encourages healthy living, resilience, goal-setting, and achievement.
Parental Engagement
We recognise the importance of parental involvement in PSHE and RSE education. Parents are regularly informed through termly curriculum newsletters, consultation meetings, and access to teaching materials. Opportunities for workshops and Q&A sessions are also provided to support understanding of PSHE topics.
Impact
Our PSHE curriculum is designed to meet the needs of our pupils, supporting their spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, and physical development while promoting British Values. By the time our pupils leave Leyland Methodist Schools, they will:
Confidently approach real-life situations and apply their skills to navigate modern life.
Be well on their way to becoming healthy, open-minded, respectful, socially and morally responsible, active members of society.
Appreciate and respect diversity and differences in the world around them.
Understand and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual Respect, Rule of Law, and Individual Liberty.
Be able to recognise and manage their emotions effectively.
Have an understanding of how to maintain good mental health and well-being.
Develop and sustain positive, healthy relationships with their peers, both now and in the future.
Gain age-appropriate knowledge of the physical aspects of RSE.
Show respect for themselves and others.

By embedding PSHE throughout the school experience, incorporating British Values, and ensuring consistency with the PSHE Overview, we ensure that our pupils leave with the skills and understanding needed to thrive in their future lives.
