Pupil Leaders

At Leyland Methodist Schools, we are committed to fostering leadership qualities in our pupils. Our ethos emphasises celebrating each individual's unique talents and encouraging service to others, aligning with our mission to "Love, Serve, Celebrate Together."

Through various leadership opportunities, we aim to nurture responsible, compassionate, and proactive leaders within our school community.

Every pupil at Leyland Methodist Schools is encouraged to take on daily responsibilities that contribute to the well-being of our school environment. These tasks include maintaining classroom organisation, assisting peers, and participating in school-wide initiatives. Such responsibilities instil a sense of ownership and community among our pupils.

Key Leadership Roles

We offer a variety of leadership positions to cater to diverse interests and strengths:

  • Reading Champions: pupils who promote literacy by organising reading sessions and supporting peers in developing reading skills. Our commitment to literacy and pupil involvement is evident through our children being involved in world book day, author visits as well as supporting peers with choosing suitable books.
  • School Council Representatives: Elected pupils who represent their classmates, voicing opinions and collaborating on school improvement projects.
  • Eco Committee Members: Pupils dedicated to environmental sustainability, leading initiatives such as recycling programs and energy conservation efforts. Our Eco Committee has participated in activities like trips to Brockholes to enhance their understanding of environmental issues.
  • Sports Leaders: Pupils form Year 2 and Year 5 who are coached and trained by South Ribble Sports Coaches in the Autumn term.
  • Ethos Committee: A group of pupils dedicated to upholding and promoting the school’s Christian values. They play a key role in leading worships, both in school and across the Epworth Trust, including live Zoom worships. They also support charitable initiatives, such as our partnership with the Edukids Foundation, helping to raise awareness and funds for children’s education worldwide. Through their work, the Ethos Committee ensures that faith, kindness, and inclusivity remain at the heart of our school community.

Pupil Leadership - Infants

At Leyland Methodist Schools, we believe that even our youngest pupils can be leaders. Through various leadership opportunities, children learn valuable skills such as teamwork, communication, and responsibility.

School Council Influence

Our School Council representatives play a key role in shaping the school environment. This year, they presented their ideas to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) on how to promote positive behaviour during playtimes. Their suggestions focused on creating a more engaging and inclusive playground experience, ensuring that every child feels safe and happy while playing.

Playground Development

As part of this initiative, our Infant Building's Committee were actively involved in the design of our new playground. The pupils were involved in the initial planning stages. They looked at designs and together with the planners chose the most suitable equipment for KS1 children. Towards the end of the project they reviewed the work completed with Mrs Chadwick to check it was completed to a high standard. They shared their positive response with the construction workers. To complete the project they had a final meeting with Mr Hodges the contractor, to thank him for the hard work. Following on from this Mrs Chadwick talked through with the play leaders/buildings committee how the play equipment should be used safely . We looked at the number of children allowed on each piece of equipment and how it should be used safely. During the course of a week the sports leaders worked with each class to model the expectations on how to use the equipment safely but also how to have lots of FUN!

Infant Play Leaders

Following the School Council’s efforts, we are excited to introduce Play Leaders in the Infants! These children will be specially chosen to help make playtimes fun and fair. Their role includes:

  • Encouraging inclusive play.
  • Helping children find friends to play with.
  • Supporting positive behaviour during break times.
  • Organising specific games in designated zones.

Ethos Committee and Worship Leadership

Our Infant Ethos Committee plays a vital role in promoting our Christian values. These young leaders help to deliver worships both in school and as part of the Epworth Trust, where we connect with other Methodist schools. Their work includes:

  • Taking part in live Zoom worships to share messages of faith and kindness across schools.
  • Leading in-school worships that focus on our core values, such as love, respect, and perseverance.
  • Partnering with the Edukids Foundation, helping to raise awareness and support for children in need across the world.

By providing these leadership opportunities, we help our infants build confidence and a sense of responsibility within their school community.

Pupil Leadership - Juniors

At Leyland Methodist Schools, we offer a range of leadership roles that allow pupils to take ownership of their school environment and influence positive change.

School Council’s Role in Positive Behaviour

Our Junior School Council recently took the initiative to present their ideas to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) on ways to promote respect, kindness, and inclusion across the school. Their presentation focused on:

  • Creating a peer-led support system where pupils encourage and model positive behaviour.
  • Improving playground interactions by introducing structured activities.
  • Increasing opportunities for pupils to share their thoughts on school life.

This presentation led to the introduction of the Play Leaders Scheme in the infants.

Play Leaders Scheme

To help create a supportive and engaging playground environment, we have now established Play Leaders from Years 5 and 6. These pupils have been trained to:

  • Organise fun games and activities for younger pupils.
  • Help resolve minor conflicts in a positive way.
  • Promote teamwork and friendship through structured play.

Ethos Committee and Worship Leadership

Our Ethos Committee is a key part of school life, working together to promote the school’s Christian values. These pupils take on leadership roles in:

  • Leading collective worships in school and within the Epworth Trust.
  • Hosting live Zoom worships, where they share reflections, prayers, and messages with partner schools.
  • Supporting the Edukids Foundation, helping raise awareness and funds to support children’s education globally.

Through these leadership opportunities, our pupils gain confidence and develop a strong sense of service to others. The work of our Ethos Committee, School Council, and Play Leaders ensures that our school continues to be a nurturing, inclusive, and inspiring environment for all.

Infant and Junior Reading Champions

At Leyland Methodist Primary School, our Reading Champions play a vital role in fostering a love for reading across both the Infant and Junior schools. These dedicated pupils work hard to make reading an exciting and accessible experience for everyone.

Revamping the Libraries

Our Reading Champions have been actively involved in the transformation of both the Infant and Junior libraries. Their responsibilities have included:

  • Selecting new books to ensure our libraries reflect a diverse range of stories, interests, and reading abilities.
  • Organising bookshelves and reading spaces to create a welcoming and engaging environment.
  • Introducing themed reading corners to spark curiosity and imagination.

Supporting Classroom Reading Areas

Beyond the library, our Reading Champions help to enhance reading areas within classrooms by:

  • Ensuring books are well-organised and rotated regularly to maintain interest.
  • Recommending books to classmates based on their interests and reading levels.
  • Promoting the Little Wandle Phonics and Early Reading Scheme in the Infant school to support younger readers.

Encouraging a Love for Reading

As role models, Reading Champions inspire their peers by:

  • Hosting reading sessions where they read aloud to younger pupils.
  • Running book clubs to discuss their favourite stories.
  • Helping classmates choose books that match their interests and reading abilities.

Through their enthusiasm and leadership, our Reading Champions help create a school culture where reading is celebrated and enjoyed by all!

Cuerden Valley Park - Serving our local community

During Autumn term, several school council members went to assist the park rangers to help build new houses for the hedgehogs. This involved constructing them, supplying them with food and water and then camouflaging them. The children were fantastic representatives of the school and have served our local community well.
