At Leyland Methodist Schools, we are dedicated to providing our students with the highest quality education, laying a strong foundation for their future learning. A critical component of this foundation is literacy, and to ensure our students develop exceptional reading and writing skills, we have implemented the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics programme.
What is Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised?
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is a comprehensive, systematic synthetic phonics programme designed to teach children to read by blending sounds (phonemes) and to write by segmenting words into their constituent sounds. This methodical approach ensures that every child becomes a confident and proficient reader by the end of Year 1.
Why We Chose Little Wandle
After thorough research and consideration, we selected Little Wandle for several compelling reasons:
Proven Effectiveness: The programme is based on the principles of the Department for Education's (DfE) validated phonics schemes, ensuring it meets high educational standards.
Comprehensive Resources: Little Wandle offers a wealth of resources, including detailed lesson plans, engaging visuals, and decodable books that align with each stage of learning.
Inclusive Support: The programme includes built-in 'Keep Up' sessions to provide additional support for children who may need it, ensuring no child is left behind.
How It Works
The Little Wandle programme is structured into phases that progressively build children's phonics knowledge:
Phase 2: Children begin learning initial sounds and blending them to read simple words.
Phase 3: Introduction of more complex sounds and continued practice in blending and segmenting.
Phase 4: Focus on consolidating previous learning and developing fluency.
Phase 5: Learning alternative spellings and pronunciations for sounds.
This structured approach ensures that children build on their knowledge systematically, leading to confident and skilled readers.
Parental Involvement
We believe that parents play a crucial role in their child's reading journey. To support you in this role, Little Wandle provides resources specifically designed for parents, including:
Phonics Flashcards: Interactive flashcards to practice sounds at home.
Online Games: Engaging games to reinforce learning in a fun way.
Guidance Videos: Short videos demonstrating how to pronounce sounds and support reading at home.
